Pitstone Windmill

Monday, 1 April 2019

Today we took a drive out to Pitstone Windmill.  Pitstone Windmill is one of the oldest post mills in Britain and was built in 1627 or possibly even earlier.  The date of 1627 is inscribed on the windmill, but it is thought that this might have been the date of a repair on the windmill, so the structure probably predates that.

Pitstone Windmill was used to mill locally grown grain into flour and was in use until it was extensively damaged in a gale in 1902, after which it fell into disrepair.   The windmill was donated to the National Trust in 1937 and over time they have brought it back to its former glory.
