A Festive Day out in London

Today we headed into London for a festive day out with a friend.  Our plan was to visit Hyde Park Winter Wonderland and to see the Christmas lights in London.

Our rough itinerary looked like this:

* Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

* Covent Garden

* Seven Dials Market

* Trafalgar Square

* Piccadilly Circus

* Fortnum and Mason

* Burlington Arcade

* New Bond St

* Carnaby Street

* Liberty London

* Oxford Circus (views of Oxford Street and Regent Street)

* Selfridges

We started our day at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland.

None of us had ever been to
Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, so we were quite excited to see what it had to offer.  We had heard very mixed reviews, so we weren't at all sure what to expect.  Being over 50, and with somewhat limited time, we focussed our attention on the Magical Ice Kingdom, the Christmas Market and the Bavarian Village.  We had a wonderful time and are very keen to go back next year, perhaps taking the "littles" with to enjoy some of the rides.

Here are some photos we took during our visit:

Having enjoyed lunch in the Bavarian Village, with live music from an oompah band, we headed off to Covent Garden.

We then followed the map (see above) and made our way around London, taking in the various Christmas displays and the gorgeous Christmas lights.

We enjoyed a mulled wine at Trafalgar square, although we found the Christmas market a little lacklustre after the market at Winter Wonderland and the Christmas tree (a gift from Norway) is a bit sad to be frank.

We thoroughly enjoyed our wander around London's Christmas lights.

I have to admit that our photos don't do it justice - taking successful photos of Christmas lights is surprisingly difficult!

The only disappointment of the day was our trip to Selfridges - we felt it was quite a hack to get there and then it really wasn't that "wow" at all, so it seemed a lot of effort for little reward.  Perhaps we would have done better to pop into Fortnum and Mason, John Lewis or Liberty.  The other thing I would have changed would probably been to have got to Seven Dials a little later, when it was getting dark - the lights there were lovely, but it was still a little early to really appreciate them.

All in all it was a lovely day out and we thoroughly enjoyed soaking up the festive atmosphere that is so typical of London at this time of year.

Waddesdon Manor Christmas Market and Winter Light Trail

Waddesdon Manor is a fabulous place to visit any time of year, but it really shows off at Christmas time.  Christmas at Waddesdon Manor is a feast for the senses.  There is something about the mellow coloured walls and grandeur of the place that just lends itself to being decked out in Christmassy splendour.

We make a point of visiting the Christmas market annually and it is an amazing way to get the Christmas season off to a good start.  There is nothing like a mug of mulled wine, twinkling lights, Christmas trees and a Christmas market to get me in the mood for all things Christmas and our outing to the Waddesdon Manor Christmas market this year ticked all of those boxes.

Waddesdon Manor

Having fluffed things up a bit last year, this year we made sure to time our visit a bit better - after a browse around the market and a bite to eat at the food village it was dark enough to really appreciate the Winter Light Trail

My photos do NOT do the Light Trail justice, it is really beautiful with lights timed to change colour in time to the music, interactive elements which the kids loved and something surprising around every corner.

We had a lovely afternoon at Waddesdon Manor and highly recommend a visit.

London Day 1

Living in fairly close proximity to London, we often end up doing daytrips to London if we have visitors from South Africa.  I have 2 daytrip itineraries that I use again and again, so I thought I'd share them here.  This is the itinerary that I like to call "London Day 1" and it takes in Big Ben, 10 Downing Street, the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden, Seven Dials Market, Chinatown, Piccadilly Circus. Carnaby Street and Oxford Street.

As this itinerary includes the Changing of the Guard, it's important to do it on a day when the ceremony is actually happening.  In June and July the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace happens daily, but between August and May it usually only happens on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.  It's best to check this website for confirmed dates.

This itinerary starts from Westminster Tube station and you need to be there at 10am at the latest if you want to get a good spot at the Changing of the Guard.   If you want to see more than a quick exterior view of Westminster Abbey and Parliament Square you need to start earlier.  Look here to see prices and entry times for Westminster Abbey

Itinerary Part 1 map:

/>

Assuming you are leaving Westminster Abbey at 10:00:

Exit Westminster tube station and have a look at Big Ben

Walk across the road to have a (very) quick look at Parliament square and the exterior of Westminster Abbey

Walk to 10 Downing Street and have a look at the door to the home of the Prime minister.

Walk to Horse Guards Parade and continue on St James Park

Walk through the park, perhaps grabbing a quick takeaway coffee on the way - there is a kiosk and toilets (you need a coin or a card to tap) very close to the spot marked "Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk" on the map above

Find a spot opposite St James' Palace to watch the Changing of the Guard.  Try to get to the front of the spectators at the spot marked "Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk" on the map above.  Quite a crowd usually gathers, so it’s good to get there early to get a good spot.

Once the band has marched past, follow them towards Buckingham Palace (the crowd will surge in that direction so walk quickly) or instead of walking to Buckingham Palace you might want to cut across St James Park to Wellington Barracks on Birdcage Walk (the final point on the map above) to see the new guard and band as they form and leave for Buckingham Palace.

Itinerary Part 2 map:

View Buckingham Palace before making your way up the Mall, passing the Duke of York Column, before reaching Trafalgar Square.

Have a wander around Trafalgar Square, admiring Nelson's Column and perhaps making a quick visit to the National Gallery.

Head to Covent Garden for a wander around the market and possibly have a drink before heading to Seven Dials Market for lunch.

Itinerary Part 3 map:

After lunch take a walk from Seven Dials market to Chinatown, possibly stopping for an ice-cream on the way.  Carry on to Piccadilly Circus via Leicester Square.  Head to SoHo and Carnaby Street.

Itinerary Part 4 map:

From Carnaby Street head to Regent Street and Oxford Street.   There are lovely shops on both these streets, including the famous Hamley's toy store and flagship stores for all the famous brand-name stores.

This itinerary ends at Oxford Circus where there are good transport links.

Warwick Castle

We had been meaning to visit Warwick Castle for ages, so when our godson came over from South Africa in June it presented us with the perfect excuse to finally book tickets and plan a visit.  This was Impi's first trip to the UK, so we knew that visiting a castle would be a wonderful experience for him.

We absolutely loved our visit to Warwick Castle!  Our daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren, one of whom is autistic, joined us, so our group was pretty diverse and I can honestly say that there was something on offer for everyone.

The children had an absolute ball, there was SO much for them to see and do, including an amazing playground, live shows and processions.

The Bird of Prey show was the best we have ever seen and we've seen a few.

I also really enjoyed walking through the rooms of the castle, which are incredibly well-preserved.  I would highly recommend a visit to Warwick Castle to anyone, but particularly to families with children or overseas visitors.
